I have been stricken with a cold now for 2 weeks and I have been at my wit's end with it! Last evening as I was lounging about on the sofa, my natural habitat since being attacked by this virus, I was doing a bit of reading. I came upon an article on pineapple and became very excited to read that pineapple is valuable for easing indigestion, arthritis and sinusitis! My sinuses are driving me to the brink of insanity! Well, imagine my excitement! I had just purchased a pineapple and had not yet cut it up for consumption! I read on...The juice has an anthelmintic effect; it helps get rid of intestinal worms, thankfully an ailment that I do not endure!
Pineapple is high in manganese, a mineral that is critical to development of strong bones and connective tissue. A cup of fresh pineapple will give you nearly 75% of the recommended daily amount. It is particularly helpful to older adults, whose bones tend to become brittle with age. Yes, it appears I should consume pineapple on a regular basis as there is no denying I am aging.
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme in the pineapple, is the key to pineapple's value. Proteolytic means "breaks down protein", which is why pineapple is known to be a digestive aid. It helps the body digest proteins more efficiently. Bromelain is also considered an effective anti-inflammatory. Regular ingestion of at least one half cup of fresh pineapple daily is purported to relieve painful joints common to osteoarthritis and it produces mild pain relief. The article states that in Germany, bromelain is approved as a post-injury medication because it is thought to reduce inflammation and swelling.
Fresh pineapple is not only high in vitamin C, but because of the bromelain, it has the ability to reduce mucus in the throat. YES! I must cut it up at once and I will dine on it with exuberance! Finally, hope that something natural will help me feel better! (I am a major believer in foods that heal) The article states that if you have a cold with a productive cough, add pineapple to your diet. It is commonly used in Europe as a post-operative measure to cut mucus after certain sinus and throat operations. Those who eat fresh pineapple daily report fewer sinus problems related to allergies. In and of itself, pineapple has a very low risk for allergies.
Pineapple is also known to discourage blood clot development. This makes it a valuable dietary addition for frequent fliers and others who may be at risk for blood clots.
I read once that an old folk remedy for morning sickness is fresh pineapple juice. Fresh juice and some nuts first thing in the morning often makes a difference. It's also good for a healthier mouth. The fresh juice discourages plaque growth. For anyone suffering morning sickness, you may want to give this a try! I remember only to well what those days were like.
After reading I went straight to the kitchen and cut the pineapple with great anticipation. Will this be the end of my stuffy head? I ate about a cup of pineapple and waited for the benefits to kick in. (I realize it isn't a drug but I threw all reason out the window and replaced it with hope) It had not taken effect by the time I retired for the evening but, as with some things, I knew it might take time.
I am happy to report that this morning my head is not quite as stuffy as it was yesterday and I can finally hear again! Was it the pineapple? I'm not sure but you can bet I will be eating more of it today and will make it a more regular part of my diet after reading all of the benefits of this delicious fruit. One thing I did not realize was that if you do not like pineapple, you can purchase it in capsule form.
While I am lounging about eating this wonderous fruit today I may just indulge in this beauty mask recipe!
Pineapple Beauty Mask
Do this once-a-week facial before you go to sleep when you don't have to wear makeup for 6-8 hours:
Puree 1 cup of fresh pineapple and 1/2 cup of fresh papaya (slightly green). Add the pureed fruit and 2 tablespoons of honey in a bowl and mix.
After washing your face with warm water (to open your pores), apply the mixture to your face (do not get in your eyes), leave it on for 5 minutes (no longer), and rinse with cool water.
